A Kid’s Book about Chosen Family explores the concept of choosing those who choose you. Taken directly from the book’s intro, “To me, chosen family are the people you invite into your heart who see (and love) you for your truest self. In communities worldwide, the chosen family often plays a crucial role in providing emotional support, understanding, and unconditional love. Chosen families can offer a unique alternative to traditional, biological families. But, this concept does not erase the importance of family in the traditional sense—they are not mutually exclusive. What I mean is, that a chosen family is a group of souls who may not necessarily be related by shared DNA, but who choose to form deep, meaningful, and supportive connections with one another.”
This book is designed to spark imagination, foster a love for reading, and impart valuable life lessons in a way that resonates with children and their families.

Such a sweet, accessible books that should be in every school library! Our culture is so focused on individualism and nuclear family units, and it was refreshing to read a kid’s book that focused on love, community and the idea that you can find your people anywhere. Thank you for writing this Madi!
A beautifully written book which highlights such an important and meaningful topic, especially for those within the queer community who have historically been reliant on members of their chosen family. A Kid’s Book About Chosen Family allows readers to explore the spectrum of what family and a strong support system can look like. The interactive portion of this book allows kids (and adults!) a chance to understand the importance of meaningful connections, and identify those in their life that support all parts of themselves. Highly recommended!!
With vibrant illustrations/word art and clear language, this book navigates the complex concept of chosen family with grace and authenticity. This gem highlights the importance of belonging and being loved and seen for who you are. One of the best parts of the book is the ten interactive questions that help identify people in our lives who make us feel the most like us!
My daughter is in (Madi’s) GSA and she wrote this beautiful book. I was surprised how touched I was. I initially purchased it for my kiddo. But when my kiddo read it to me, it brought up so much from my own childhood. I was adopted at 12 so I know what it’s like to have a chosen family and what it’s like to not fit in as a foster kid. I also know what it’s like to be a mom and ally of 2SLGBTQIA+ people. I believe this is a much needed book for all to know it’s okay to have a chosen family and to be with the people who bring out and love the truest you.
This book is a wonderful read that is a highly inclusive representation of what makes a family! Madi’s shared experience of finding their own chosen family within community helps the reader to connect with real life examples of how those around us can be considered family. Though this book is targeted towards youth, adults can learn a lot too. I’m grateful to be able to share this resource with my clients in the future!
